I was on YouTube today just out of chance. I happened across a few videos on chimps and gorillas and decided to skim through them. I learned a few things along the way. I learned that cannibalism is practiced by apes in warfare. The victors feed on the dead of the other tribe and I watched as a group of victors feasted on a young chimp that wasn't as lucky as the others in his tribe. I found this less disturbing than most would assume. It got me thinking about an idea for a story. Most people, or I would assume most people, would be inspired by real tales of cannibalism or, at the very least, by someone like Hannibal Lecter. I was inspired by apes. They're so much like us and so many people are just unwilling to admit that. They may be our evolutionary darker side. They highlight the evils of survival that we've long forgotten through pure reason. Then again, it's not like we've forgotten it completely. It would seem that it still persists in Papua New Guinea according to new studies by anthropologists. It makes us so much more ape-like than we realize. This idea still isn't developed yet, but this theme of the darker human-ape connection may persist throughout. I'll take some ideas if anyone has any.
